Children's dentistry in Franklin and Edinburgh
We see children from around age one at our Franklin and Edinburgh offices, with checkups every six months as they grow, so your whole family can see the same dentist.
One dentist for your whole family
Family life is busy, and you do not have time to take each person to a different dental provider. Our team offers dental care for the entire family, children and parents alike, at two offices: Franklin and Edinburgh. Children are welcome at both.
When everyone in your family sees the same dentist, visits are more convenient for you, and your child gets to know the dentist who also cares for you.
Your child’s first visit
As your child’s first teeth come in, you may wonder when to bring them to the dentist. Dr. Nathan Corn likes to see children around age one, or six months after their first teeth begin to come in.
That can seem early. Seeing your child this young gives us time to get to know them, to watch for any developmental concerns from the start, and to help your child get used to our office and the instruments we use.
At the first visit, we:
- show your child the big chair
- count their teeth
- have Dr. Corn examine your child’s mouth, if your child is willing
Sitting in the big chair and counting teeth give your child a first look at what a dental visit involves.
If your child is not ready for the exam, that is fine. These first visits build the trust your child brings to every visit after, so we never move forward with any procedure until your child is comfortable with it.
Checkups every six months as your child grows
Children should see the dentist every six months, just like their parents. As your child becomes more at ease in the chair, we add cleanings to these visits.
As your child gets older, we monitor their development with x-rays, and we may recommend preventive care to protect their teeth:
- Fluoride is a mineral that helps build and strengthen developing teeth. It can also help remineralize teeth that decay has weakened.
- Dental sealants are thin coatings over the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth. They help protect those teeth against decay and cavities.
- Protective wear for sports guards your child’s teeth and mouth during play. If your child plays a sport, Dr. Corn can recommend the right protection.
Finding concerns early
When we see your child every six months, we can tell you about any treatment concerns early on. Catching a concern early typically means less invasive treatment for your child.
Our team works to keep every one of your child’s visits positive, so they grow up with a good relationship with dentistry. We look forward to meeting your child and building a relationship with them.

Questions about children's dentistry
Can my child come with me to my own dental appointments?
Yes, and we encourage it. Sitting in on your visit helps your child get used to our office and see that the dentist is not a scary place. First visits matter for a child's success later on, which is why Dr. Corn takes time to get to know your child and build a relationship early.
Is a mouth guard from a sporting goods store enough for sports?
A custom-made mouth guard typically gives your child better protection during sports than a generic guard from a sporting goods store. Ask us about one at your child's next checkup.
