When several teeth are missing, you may find yourself smiling less, or thinking twice about what you can order when you sit down at a restaurant. Dr. Nathan Corn wants you to know that there are good ways to replace them.

There are three ways we replace several teeth at once:

  • A full denture replaces every tooth in your upper or lower arch.
  • A partial denture fills the gaps when you still have several healthy teeth.
  • An implant-supported denture fits onto a few dental implants, which hold it securely in place.

A full denture for a whole arch of teeth

A full denture is a removable appliance, usually made of acrylic, that replaces an entire arch of missing teeth. An arch is the whole row of teeth along your upper or lower jaw.

Today’s dentures look natural. When Dr. Corn designs yours, he takes details like your skin tone and the structure of your face into account. The goal is a denture that looks right on you and works well when you eat.

A full denture stays in place through a snug, tight fit and suction, which is why getting the fit right matters so much.

A partial denture that works with your healthy teeth

If you are missing several teeth but still have several healthy ones, a partial denture is a good option. Your healthy teeth support the partial, and natural-looking replacement teeth fill the open spaces like puzzle pieces.

A partial blends in with the rest of your smile and gives you back the chewing and eating you have been missing. It works alongside the teeth you still have, rather than replacing them.

Dentures and partials held in place by implants

Dental implants can give a denture or a partial a more secure fit, and they make the biggest difference for people who wear a full denture.

Dr. Corn places a few implants in your jawbone at carefully chosen points. He then designs a denture that fits onto the implants and stays firmly in place, so it does not move or slip when you talk or eat.

Implants can support a bridge, a partial or a complete denture, whether you are replacing a few teeth or restoring your entire smile. They also keep your jawbone stimulated, which helps protect the bone from wearing away and helps your denture last.

Questions about dentures and partials

Will talking and eating feel different with a new denture?

At first, yes. There is a learning curve while you get used to talking and eating with a denture. Most patients appreciate that it gives them their smile back right away.

Will my denture need adjusting after I get it?

From time to time, a denture needs relining so that it keeps a proper fit. That is one reason to keep seeing Dr. Corn for your yearly check-up once you have your denture.

Can I take a partial denture out to clean it?

Yes. A partial comes out easily, so you can take it out at night and clean it.
