Root canal therapy relieves tooth pain

Few dental treatments have as poor a reputation as root canal therapy, because people associate it with pain. That reputation is not deserved. The pain comes from the infection inside the tooth, and root canal therapy is the treatment that relieves it.

How a tooth becomes infected

When a tooth is injured or cracked, the soft tissue inside it can be exposed to bacteria and decay. If that decay reaches the pulp, the part of the tooth that holds the nerve, the pulp becomes infected and you begin to feel pain.

Root canal therapy treats that infection from the inside and gives you the chance to keep your natural tooth instead of losing it.

What happens during root canal therapy

Dr. Corn clears the infection first and finishes the tooth once it has healed:

  1. He makes a small opening in the top of the tooth and removes the infected tissue from inside it.
  2. Once all of the infection is gone, we seal the tooth with a temporary filling and give it time to heal.
  3. After the healing time has passed, you come back to our office for the final step, and we strengthen the tooth with a permanent filling or a dental crown.

You can have root canal therapy at either of our offices, in Franklin or Edinburgh.

Call us when a tooth hurts or turns sensitive

Tooth pain is a reason to call us right away. Root canal therapy may be able to save the tooth if you act quickly, and Dr. Corn can help. Our Franklin office is open Monday through Thursday, and our Edinburgh office is open Monday through Friday, including 8 am to 2 pm on Fridays.

The same goes for a tooth that starts to feel sensitive. Call us and have it looked at, even if the sensitivity goes away on its own. Catching the problem early may mean we can treat the tooth with a less invasive procedure and spare you the pain of an infection.

Regular checkups can prevent many root canals

Many root canals can be avoided with consistent preventive visits. When you keep up with regular dental care, we can help you avoid many dental problems, including the infections that lead to root canals.

At a checkup, Dr. Corn can spot decay in its early stages. Found that early, it may be taken care of with a filling, a less invasive procedure, before infection and pain set in. Whether it has been six months or six years since your last visit, we are glad to see you.

Whether a tooth hurts now or you are due for a checkup, call either of our two offices, Franklin at (317) 736-9546 or Edinburgh at (812) 220-2676, or request an appointment.

Questions about root canal therapy

Will I feel anything during a root canal?

Dr. Corn uses dental anesthetic so you do not feel anything during the procedure. The anesthetic also relieves the ache from the infection right away.

Will a tooth infection go away without treatment?

No. An infection inside a tooth does not clear up on its own. Left untreated, it can spread to other critical areas of your body, and it can lead to losing the tooth.
